A threat actor on a known cybercrime forum is claiming to sell a database that they allege was stolen from Claro Peru, a major telecommunications provider in Latin America. According to the seller’s post, the database contains sensitive customer Personally Identifiable Information (PII). The listed data fields suggest the leak includes critical information such as the National Identity Document number (DNI), telephone numbers, and email addresses.

This claim, if true, represents a critical data breach with the potential for widespread harm to a large number of Peruvian citizens. A database from a national telecommunications provider containing foundational identity documents like the DNI is a powerful tool for criminals. The primary and most immediate threat from such a leak is the enablement of large-scale SIM swapping attacks, which criminals use to take over victims’ mobile numbers and intercept two-factor authentication codes for their most sensitive online accounts.

All telecom providers in Peru should be urged to immediately implement stricter identity verification protocols for any customer request to swap a SIM card or port a phone number.
