Hong Kong Privacy Watchdog Investigating Louis Vuitton Data Leak Affecting 419,000 Customers

HONG KONG, July 21 (Reuters) – Hong Kong’s privacy watchdog announced on Monday it is investigating a data leak at luxury brand Louis Vuitton that has exposed information belonging to approximately 419,000 customers. This investigation follows a separate cyberattack on Louis Vuitton in South Korea in June.

The compromised data includes customers’ names, passport details, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, shopping history, and product preferences, according to an emailed statement from Hong Kong’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data.

Louis Vuitton (LVMH.PA), whose French head office detected suspicious activity on its computer system on June 13, submitted the data breach incident to the Hong Kong office on July 17. It was later discovered on July 2 that Hong Kong customers were affected.

The privacy office has launched an investigation into Louis Vuitton Hong Kong, specifically examining whether there was a delay in notifying affected parties. As of now, no related complaints or inquiries have been received.

This incident in Hong Kong occurs shortly after a system breach at Louis Vuitton in South Korea in June. That breach also led to the leak of some customer data, including contact information, though the company stated it did not involve customers’ financial information.
